Elizabeth M. Howell is offering mediation services beginning July 2025.
Family mediation is a voluntary or court ordered, confidential process that allows separating couples or coparents to work through issues with the help of a neutral third party. It can be court ordered, or parties can agree to attend mediation before or during litigation. The goal is to reach fair, practical solutions without the cost, time, and emotional toll of lengthy contested court case.
Mediation empowers both parties to take control of their own outcomes and fosters respectful communication during what is often a difficult transition. Even if you and your spouse or coparent do not agree on everything, mediation can provide a productive framework to reach common ground.
Elizabeth M. Howell is an experienced family law attorney who brings both legal knowledge and compassion to the mediation process. She has completed intensive training in divorce mediation, including a 40-hour program with the Center for Mediation & Training covering dispute resolution theory, legal and financial issues, and practical techniques. Elizabeth is available to serve as a neutral mediator for both represented and unrepresented parties throughout Kentucky.
Answers to your most commonly asked questions.
Why choose mediation?
Mediation offers many benefits compared to traditional litigation:
More Affordable: Costs are typically lower than litigation, especially when both parties are willing to work together.
Faster Resolution: Couples can often reach agreements in weeks, not months or years.
Private and Confidential: Sessions are not part of the public record, unlike many court proceedings.
Child-Focused: Mediation encourages cooperative co-parenting arrangements that prioritize the best interests of children.
Client-Controlled Outcomes: You and your spouse or coparent control the decisions, not a judge.
Why issues can be mediated?
Mediation can be used to resolve all aspects of a divorce or separation, including parenting time and custody agreements; child support; spousal maintenance (alimony); division of property and debt; temporary arrangements during separation; and, post-divorce modifications.
Who should consider mediation?
Mediation may be a good fit for couples who want to reduce conflict, are open to honest conversation, or prefer a private setting.
Do I still need an attorney if I use mediation?
Mediators do not represent either party or provide legal advice. Many clients choose to attend mediation with an attorney or consult with an attorney before or after mediation to review agreements.
How long does mediation take?
Many issues can be resolved in one or two sessions, depending on the complexity of your situation and willingness to compromise.
Where do sessions take place?
Mediation is conducted at our office or at an agreed upon attorney’s office. Virtual mediation is available by request.
